Finding Balance In Life

Are you looking for ways to find balance in your life? Join the club, mama. Balance is one of the most difficult things to achieve in life. Thankfully, with tools from your perinatal yoga practice, you’ll learn a few ways to practice balance.

If you think about it, the word “balance” has many meanings. As all of our yoga classes have themes and balance can be focused on for a whole practice, or sprinkled in throughout. When early signs of pregnancy start to show up, we quickly become aware of the shift our life is about to take. Have you ever stopped to think about how this part of your pregnancy journey can be filled with growth and an opportunity to learn about yourself?

Let’s keep going as I explain how we practice these many meanings of balance in our prenatal yoga classes.

Physical Balance

When you think of balance related to yoga, you probably think of balancing poses. Outside of the physical balance, what do these poses require?

  • Concentration Shifting our weight to one side throws off our body’s equilibrium. We have to be conscious of where our body is in space and practice mental concentration.

  • Bravery Some find balance poses to be intimidating, and I understand that! It’s okay to be scared and brave at the same time. It’s a lesson that will show up many times throughout your life.

  • Core Control Our pelvic floor and core muscles kick into high gear during balancing poses to stabilize the center of your body. This is extra important during pregnancy and postpartum!

Internal Balance

Let’s dive a little deeper into how we practice balance in other ways during pregnancy and postpartum.

  • Breathing When you lose your breath, you’ll have the tools from yoga to learn to tap back into these different breathing patterns to support you through pregnancy, labor, and postpartum.

  • Control During pregnancy and postpartum, we will be challenged to find the balance of control. Learning to accept the things we don’t have control over takes a lot of practice.

  • Intuition When we learn to listen to our body’s cues throughout our yoga classes, we gain the tool of being connected to our intuition. This is one of the most important takeaways from our prenatal yoga to help you prepare for birth.

Balancing work and rest

The ultimate goal of yoga is to connect our mind and body. The word “yoga” means “yoke”, or to bring these two together. This is why we practice both the mental and physical parts of balance in all of our yoga classes.

In our prenatal yoga, we learn these tools to use during labor and birth. We strengthen and lengthen our pelvic floor so we have better physical control of our body while actively birthing our babies (yes, you even need this control for c-section births). To prepare for postpartum, we learn how to protect our core for those early days after birth to ease getting up and down through movement and proper breathing. Most of all, we learn how to connect with our inner(S)elf.

When you return to join us for baby&me yoga, we practice moving between these poses of work and poses of rest for both you and your baby. Teaching our children at a young age the importance of balance plants a seed in their brains that will continue to grow for the rest of their lives.
